The Alfred Wegener Institute Bremerhaven has appointed Dr. Astrid Cornils as a Post-doc and the European Project Manager for the Census of Marine Zooplankton (CMarZ). Astrid's research will focus on the taxonomy and ecology of Calanoid copepods, in particular the Paracalanidae. She studied biology at the Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel (Germany) from 1995 to 2001 with major courses in marine biology, zoology and geology. In March 2001 she received her diploma from the University of Kiel. The thesis focused on the vertical and spatial distribution of phytoplankton and zooplankton taxa in the northern Red Sea.
Astrid received a Ph.D. from the University of Bremen (Germany) in April 2005, working with Sigrid Schiel from the AWI Bremerhaven and Claudio Richter from the Center of Marine Tropical Ecology in Bremen. Her doctoral research concentrated on the ecology of dominant Calanoid copepods (Clausocalanidae) from the northern Gulf of Aqaba in close cooperation with scientists from the Marine Science Station in Aqaba (Jordan)..
